Advanced Treatments (Botox® + PBM)
Botox injections provide a non-surgical option for treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. By temporarily relaxing specific muscles in the jaw, Botox can alleviate tension in the joint, offering relief from pain and discomfort. This treatment is particularly helpful for individuals experiencing chronic TMJ pain or those whose symptoms have not improved with other therapies.
The injections are typically administered into the masseter and temporalis muscles, which are crucial for jaw movement and clenching. By relaxing these muscles, Botox can also help prevent teeth grinding, a common issue associated with TMJ disorders. This reduction in muscle activity can decrease strain on the TMJ.
The procedure generally involves injecting 15–20 units of Botox per side, totaling 30–40 units. The exact dosage can vary based on the severity of the condition and the individual needs of the patient. Ensuring that both sides of the jaw are treated is crucial to avoid uneven pressure, which could potentially worsen symptoms or cause new issues.
Patients receiving Botox for TMJ disorders can expect a gradual improvement in their symptoms, with full effects usually becoming noticeable within a few days to a week after the injections. The relief provided by Botox is temporary, typically lasting three to six months, and additional treatments may be required to maintain the benefits.
PBMT
At Vidal Dental Associates, we provide Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) as a conservative and effective treatment for patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). PBMT is recognized for its ability to improve function and relieve symptoms in TMD patients. This non-invasive therapy can help reduce pain intensity, enhance TMJ movements, and positively affect electromyography (EMG) activity.
Recent studies have reinforced the benefits of PBMT, showing that it can also increase the pressure pain threshold (PPT) and decrease TMJ sounds, which are common issues for those with TMDs. By incorporating PBMT into our treatment offerings, we aim to provide comprehensive care that addresses the various aspects of this condition, helping our patients achieve better comfort and functionality.
